Frequently Asked Questions

  • ERRCS stands for Emergency Responder Radio Coverage System. It ensures that first responders (fire, police, EMS) have reliable radio coverage inside buildings, including in basements, stairwells, and other difficult-to-reach areas. It is important because fire and building codes (IFC/NFPA) require reliable in‑building radio coverage for safety.

  • In many jurisdictions, yes. Requirements depend on the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), building size, design, and coverage gaps. HetNet typically performs an assessment or test to determine compliance and whether an ERRCS is needed.

  • HetNet serves commercial offices, high-rises, hospitals, education facilities, residential complexes, government/public safety buildings, parking garages, underground structures, and mixed-use developments.

  • You must get your building tested because of the California Fire Code 510. This code states “the owner of the building or owner’s authorized agent shall have the emergency responder radio coverage shall be inspected and tested annually or where structural changes occur including additions or remodels that could materially change the original field performance list” (510.6.1).

  • The system is tested by dividing each floor into 20 grids. At each test location the signal strength is recorded. A minimum of -95 dBm is required. Additionally, the delivered audio quality (DAQ) must be sufficient for clear communications.

  • Along with testing and monitoring, the system needs regular maintenance by a certified technician to ensure optimal coverage. Timely responses are required to respond to any critical alarms that may hinder the systems operations. Preventive maintenance should include vision inspection of the equipment, testing of the battery back-up units and any software firmware updates that are needed.

  • Services include annual compliance testing (ERRCS and cellular), third-party coverage testing, monitoring, maintenance, and performance optimization.

  • Yes. HetNet can expand or retrofit existing ERRCS or in‑building wireless systems to meet new requirements or building changes.

  • Pricing depends on building size, system complexity, equipment required, permitting, and maintenance scope. HetNet provides quotes after site surveys and assessments.
